As the breeze lifts to a more easterly direction and the fleet sail more open angles it seems Team SCA find themselves looking for more speed to try and hang in with the leaders, which are proving just a click faster at times.
As a consequence, in the last few hours Team SCA has lost a few small miles, but are still going nicely on fourth place, pacing themselves on the AIS against Team Brunel and MAPFRE, which are both within three and a half miles of the girls.
Carolijn Brouwer, calm as ever, is holding back the frustration a little:"It could be better this morning.
We are at a reaching angle now and we seem to be struggling to match the leaders for pace, just a little bit. Upwind and cracked upwind, on the J1 we are even a little bit quicker than the others, under masthead we match them and are faster it is really work at it, but when the wind comes aft of, say, 85 then we struggle a little.
And that is frustrating.
We have been trying everything to keep going with them, but to see them keep pulling away is tough.""We are in 10-12kts now at 90 degrees TWA and we are just holding Brunel and and MAPFRE seem to just have a slightly higher, faster mode right now. It's been a bit of a struggle, but I think we are on to something now.""
We have been reaching for six hours now.
We made a little bit of a mistake initially, carrying on with the upwind mode and ended up losing some guage then reaching, and so one thing came after another and that cost us at the time, we were in the wrong mode for a couple of hours.
"" We are aiming to pass about 50 miles off the NE corner of Brazil, there is a little cushion there which will be quite tricky, and after that a wider angle and some faster reaching in the stronger SE'ly trades.""
At the moment we have Brunel directly ahead of us at 3.8nms and MAPFRE to weather at 2.1 miles and now we don't have anyone else on the screen.
Alvimedica are much further west and that seemed to work for them for a while and they made a gain but I think now the wind will be lighter and flukier."

 niemand die er verstand van lijkt het wel
maar ja zo dalijk de hoek om en de dames blijven op de achtergrond
