Akzo Nobel heeft problemen met het grootzeil

Damage to the track that attaches the mainsail to the back edge of the mast on team AkzoNobel’s Volvo Ocean 65 race boat has forced the crew to slow the boat down as the sailors assess the problem and try to identify potential repair options.

The damage, which was reported to Volvo Ocean Race control by email from team AkzoNobel navigator Jules Salter (GBR) this morning, happened as the crew was in fourth place, gybing along the Antarctic Ice Exclusion Zone (AIEZ) in 35 knots of wind and big seas.

During one gybe from starboard to port the mainsail track on the mast was damaged in two places. The sailors were able to lower the mainsail and turn the boat away from the AIEZ and are continuing to race using the boat’s forward sails only.

There are no reports of any injuries on board as a result of the damage and the crew is liaising with Volvo Ocean Race’s race control staff and the team’s land based technical shore crew to establish what repair options are available to them.

Race Control at the Volvo Ocean Race has extended the Antarctic Ice Exclusion Zone further north after reports of a 60-metre iceberg to the northeast of the Kerguelen Islands.

“We have been getting ice reports every 12 days from Sentinel 1 (a satellite sensor report) about the area around the Kerguelen Islands for the past month. The previous report, 12 days ago, revealed icebergs to the south and southeast of the Islands, which resulted in the original ice limits for Leg 3,” explained Race Director Phil Lawrence.

“But today we learned there is a 60-metre iceberg to the northeast of the Kerguelen Islands. Due to this, we have extended the Antarctic Ice Exclusion Zone approximately 200 miles to the north and informed the teams of the change.

“The safety of the crews is our first priority. We do not want teams surfing down waves at over 30 knots of boatspeed at night, in an area where we have been told there is a significant risk of encountering ice.”

Als ze met dat plastic huidje met een gangetje van dik 20 mijl tegen een blokje ijs tegen komen blijft er niet veel van over
